The Escape Game - Online Adventure Review

The Escape Game is an online adventure that you play using a digital zip folder full of files and information to help you solve the puzzles and clues to complete your mission. Internet access is required in order to play and the games are recommended for 1-4 players. The great thing about this is that you could easily play this over video message or conference call, just as easily as you could if you were all in the same room because you can share the links to all of the evidence files, and you could screen share the main dashboard.
There are currently two missions available to play. The Heist - Vol. 1: Chasing Hahn, and The Heist - Vol. 2: The Silk Road. I was lucky enough to be given the chance to play both missions so I could review them, so a big thank you to The Escape Game team for that! In volume 1 you work as a secret agent, helping International Police to uncover the true identity of an infamous art thief before another masterpiece goes missing; and then in volume 2 you pick up where you left off to find and capture him after reports of him dealing with artefacts related to the Silk Road.

As the story of the games goes in order it makes sense for me to talk about volume 1 first, but do stick with me right through to the end or my review! The first thing that you will need to do is create an account which is good because the game will store your progress so that any internet issues won't mean having to start over. This also is where I encountered my first issue though, this platform and game is very much designed for people in the USA. For some reason I was asked to provide my zip code, I'm not sure why it was needed for this if I'm honest and I wasn't able to leave it blank. I also couldn't enter mine because being based in the UK I don't have one and my UK one contains letters so wasn't accepted, I just made one up in the end.

Once I was in it was easy to enter my activation codes which allow me to play the games, and then I could get started! It's all really well themed and the dashboard is easy to navigate and looks great. It also flows really well and it's just fun, not taking itself too seriously. There were a couple of minor glitches like the clearing itself when trying to submit to see if you're correct, so we had to remember what answers we'd put to retype the correct ones, and you can't close the suspects ID without refreshing the dashboard, but these really didn't bother me too much.

As for the game itself, I found parts of it pretty challenging near the start and had to use the hints once or twice to be sure of what I was meant to be doing. But once we got into the swing of it and used to the style of the game we began to enjoy it more. I do wish there would have been more puzzle style sections to complete though as a lot of it felt like just looking through the files for the right information, or the right clues to put together and find the answers. I won't give anything away but there was one section in the security camera section where we we needed to use an object outside of the game/files provided but we had to use the hints in order to progress because we weren't in the USA so couldn't actually do it, plus even if I was I probably wouldn't have wanted to do this part (even though it was really clever) and I'd have felt happier with an alternative way to solve this bit. Overall

though we definitely enjoyed it and were looking forward to playing volume 2 next.

Volume 2 was brilliant. It's like everything that I felt was missing from or didn't quite work in volume 1 was just there! I did have to log out and then log back in again in order to access it as there was no main menu button from the volume 1 dashboard, but that was a minor hiccup. There were a greater variety of different puzzles to solve and we felt a lot more involved with the story line this time. I guess it felt more immersive. It also kept its fun aspect, again not taking itself too seriously but being difficult enough to make you think hard to solve and complete the tasks. I also felt that volume 2 utilised more different skills so it was more fun when playing it with other people as everyone got a chance to show their strengths. There is meant to be a volume 3 coming soon, and after this I would look forward to joining in on that mission too!

I think that this whole thing is a great idea. It works (unlike some poor excuses for escape room board games that I've tried) and it works well! It's also an excellent alternative to the traditional escape rooms that you can play from the comfort of your own home, and during the current lockdown that is fantastic news. But more than that is the fact that it uses the same fun problem solving skills and teamwork that makes escape rooms fun, so this is great for people who can't take part in the traditional rooms, plus those that just don't fancy being locked in somewhere! But it's of the same style and concept that escape room fans like myself will still really enjoy it. I would definitely recommend The Escape Game and I look forward to seeing the other games that they create.

I’m Still Having Adventures!

I’m a very adventurous person so I’m definitely missing that part of my life right now. But I am finding little ways to still keep having adventures.

We may not be able to travel, or take part in activities or escape rooms right now... But I’m grateful for the little things that I can still do, like finding new walking routes for my daily exercise.

Film and TV is definitely helping me to keep feeling adventurous as I’ve mainly been watching fantasy, sci-fi and occasionally action themed things at the moment. I’ve re-visited middle earth, been to space to visit new planets and even dimensions, plus I’ve been time travelling as I experience all of these different stories and worlds.

Magic has been found in reading again, not just because I now have more time to lose myself in a book and literally read all day, but also because I’m re-reading Harry Potter.
There are lots of little ways that we can keep doing the things we love, if we just shift our perspective a a little bit. I’m also making plans for bigger adventurous once the world is open for business again, and I’m going to be trying out my first ever online escape room very soon!

Winter Walks

Do you like going out for winter walks? Why?

My life has had a lot of changes so far this year and one of the biggest ones has been working from home more. Because of this I definitely feel the need to get out and about more!

I’ve always been a fan of going out for walks and it’s been something that my family have done since I was a kid, but I quite often find that I’m the only one of my friends who does it...

Do you ever just go out for a walk? And I don’t mean when you have to go somewhere or to walk the dog or get from A to B. I mean just going out walking for the sake of walking.

I quite often find that I have to go out for these walks on my own because it’s something that the people around me just don’t seem to do (except for when I’m visiting family), but I’m determined to keep walking.

Not only is it good to keep my fitness up bit there’s also the fresh air and enjoying the scenery and nature if I take a more scenic route. Plus for my fellow geeks there’s always Pokémon to catch! 😜

There’s also something fascinatingly peaceful or calming about it. Like you can just take that time and enjoy the moment. Anyway I love it and it keeps me healthy so I’m only seeing benefits here!

Escape London - The Da Vinci Room

Not so long ago my family decided that we would prefer to share experiences, or to give gifts of experiences to each other instead of just buying more "stuff" (unless of course we knew it was something that the person wanted, needed or they would absolutely love).

At Christmas we were given a trip to an escape room (which of course instantly made me both happy and excited because I absolutely love them) and this time it was to visit Escape London in Shepherd's Bush to try to crack The Da Vinci Room. This is one of the few escape rooms around where you can actually fit 7 people into the room to play together. That being said, I wouldn't recommend any more people than that because not only would it feel really cramped, but not everyone would get the chance to work on a puzzle and feel included.

"Our Da Vinci Room will see you take on the role of thief, but for the greater good. Dr John Albright has studied the workings of Da Vinci in great detail. He has amassed a considerable collection over the years, including what many believe to be the Holy Grail.

Having gained his trust by helping him "acquire" items over the years, you have access to areas of his home and knowledge of his security that no-one else does.  You've been paid well for your services over the years, but you've always felt that an item of the importance of the Holy Grail should be on display for everyone.
The professor is away and now is your chance. Get in the room, grab the grail and get out. It should be easy!"

This room was really good, there were a great range of puzzles to complete and they had varying degrees of difficulty. The room itself has a difficulty rating of 5 stars (their most challenging rating) and only a 43% success rate of escaping. We had an hour to complete the room and managed to do it in 45 minutes and 30 seconds, so it was a challenge for us! We really had to use our brains on this one and sometimes think outside of the box. Plus we were lucky that the people in our team all have different strengths because there's no way any of use would have been able to do the whole room on our own!

This venue was great because the staff were really friendly, the only slight negative was the temperature because it was SO warm in the waiting room (though thankfully it wasn't as hot in our puzzle room and I had layers on so could remove some). They provide you with free lockers to store your things which was definitely appreciated to store all of our winter coats. I would love to go back to this venue again to play their other rooms, plus hopefully I'll get the chance to visit their other venue in Shadwell too!.

Locked In A Room - Timelock

Ever since I took on my first escape room I have absolutely loved doing them, working our way through the story of the room and solving the puzzles. So much so that I've decided to start reviewing them as part of the adventure section of my blog.
"You are respected scientists individually working on secret government funded projects in laboratories located in an abandoned warehouse in the Theater District of Milton Keynes. One of the scientists, Professor Samuel Pottenger, has just been dragged kicking and screaming along the corridor by unknown armed assailants. Pottenger is known to you as a very level headed man of immense intelligence and absolutely not one prone to an emotional outburst… Discover his secret."
This is the description for the easiest room by Locked In A Room, and the first in their story line which links all of their rooms. I joined the fun at their Milton Keynes location, though they have more in London, Bristol and Southampton.

At Milton Keynes they have 8 rooms in total, 4 of which are identical and where you can play Timelock as we did. Each room holds a maximum of 6 players and
Picture
(something that I really like) when you book a room it is secured just for your team, even if you don't fill all 6 places. I won't say too much as spoilers would ruin the nature of the game but I did really enjoy this room. When you first arrive you are greeted as one big group before all 8 teams break off to play their separate rooms at the same time. You are asked not to make too much noise as the rooms are all next to each other but we couldn't hear anything from the rooms either side of us so they must be decently soundproofed.

We completed our room with 21 minutes of our hour remaining and although that may seem quick I feel that we did still get value for money as the puzzles were good and everyone got to do something, plus we did get stumped for a while with one of them! There was also a good range of puzzles so each person in our team got to use their strengths and the room definitely encouraged teamwork. Once finished we also got to take a fun team photo using their props and set in the welcome room.

One thing that is worth noting is that there is nowhere to wait if you are early, and you will only be admitted 10 minutes before your start time (which is also the amount of time that they advise you arrive early), so if it's cold weather like it was when I visited you may want to plan to eat of get a coffee nearby before your game to avoid waiting out in the cold. Overall though it was good fun and I'm looking forward to returning to play one of their other rooms.

Zip World!

8/10/2019

Hello everyone and welcome to my first ever blog post!
I wanted to start off with a really fun one and thought what could be better than sharing one of my recent adventures with you all.

Last week I FINALLY took a couple of days out of my crazy busy actors life schedule to actually have a little mini-break holiday and do something fun for myself! (I'm not very good at treating myself as I'm very goal driven so can be a bit of a workaholic sometimes...)

We had a couple of vouchers from last Christmas that needed to be used and they were for a night's stay in a hotel and an experience. Seeing as how I like adventure and being active, it was decided that we'd go to Snowdonia in Wales and check out Bounce Below (which I've thought looked cool ever since I first heard of it). Bounce Below is one of the attractions at Zip World near Blaenau Ffestiniog in a massive underground slate cavern, and is essentially four floors of bouncy nets that are strung across the cavern with slides and net tunnels too.

Picture
To say that Bounce Below was good fun would be the understatement of the year. I had an absolute blast!!! When you book you get given an hour to enjoy the experience and while that may not sound like long, let me tell you that after forty minutes of jumping around like a loon, sliding, and laughing my head off I was absolutely knackered!

One hour is definitely long enough and it's more than worth the money. I highly recommend the experience to anyone except those who don't like heights. You can see through the nets to the levels and people below you, and the cavern floor below that, plus as it is bouncy the floor is anything but stable. But yes, as long as you're ok with heights then you will love it.

To add to the atmosphere the staff play music (I won't forget bouncing along to Guns N' Roses Sweet Child O' Mine) and the whole cavern is lit with colourful lights. The experience is child friendly and they provide mats to help you get down the slides too.

While Zip World itself doesn't have a cafe, there is one on site and they have good and reasonably priced food. They even had jacket potatoes to keep my wheat intolerant tummy happy. There is also a gift shop and a couple of other experiences with the company who own the old quarry, though we definitely did not have time to do it all in one day.

Picture
In the afternoon we decided to do the Zip World Caverns experience as well because quite frankly it looked amazing. And it was!

Oh my gosh, where do I start with this one... It's a three hour zip lining and climbing experience through the caverns next to Bounce Below. I was excited about it from when we booked it, I got more excited when I could see other people doing part of the course during our time on Bounce Below, and it honestly lived up to every expectation. I absolutely LOVED it and can say that it is probably my favourite climbing/zip lining experience so far.

Like Bounce Below, the caverns are lit with bright colours and the location is just beautiful. You have to start off by going through training to make sure that everyone knows how to use the equipment properly and safely, and the equipment itself is extremely clever. With some of it designed by a local man, you are attached to the safety line at all times and it is not possible to take yourself off of it, there are clever lock style gates that help you move from section to section. I felt very safe doing the course because of this, which was great because once you set off it is not with your instructor so you can go at your own pace, there's even a way for you to overtake each other if you're faster or slower than the others around you. Don't worry though because the instructors are on hand watching you on cameras so they can come to assist you if you need help.

During the experience we completed eleven zip lines, scaled the walls of the cavern, scrambled a little on the slate and up nets, crossed rope bridges, and even got to choose between the challenge of monkey bars or a tightrope at the end. I chose the tightrope because I just don't have that much upper body strength (no seriously I tried them in my local park and only managed two bars before failing hilariously), and I didn't fancy just ending up dangling above a cavern!

I had the time of my life doing the Caverns experience and it was certainly the highlight of the trip. I've love to go back to Zip World again at some point to try out their other experiences, especially as they also have two more sites, so hopefully that will be possible...

If you want to see more from my experiences there then you're in luck as I will also be posting a vlog from the trip so do keep an eye out for that on #TheReelRoad playlist on YouTube!
